Longtime Anchorage resident Richard "Dick" William Spils, 63, died Jan. 3 at Providence Hospital. Visitation was at Holy Family Cathedral with a vigil service. A funeral was held at Holy Family Cathedral with Archbishop Francis Hurley of the Archdiocese of Anchorage officiating. Pallbearers included Gregory, Daniel, Conrad and Robert Spils, Jack Jordan and Robert Erwin. Burial was at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery in the Catholic section.

Mr. Spils was born Dec. 13, 1931, in Plummer, Idaho. He came to Alaska in 1948 with Father Jake Spils to construct St. Marys School and Copper Valley School in Glennallen. He lived in St. Marys and Glennallen before moving to Anchorage in 1961. He worked for Honeywell and Standard Oil of California until founding Engineered Equipment Co. of Alaska in 1967. The company patented several pieces of equipment used in oilfields worldwide, according to his family. Mr. Spils was a member of Holy Family Cathedral and served on its parish council and building committee. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Petroleum Club of Anchorage, Instrument Society of America and Registered Professional Engineers, and Masters Downhill and Cross-Country Skiing Club. He was named Mechanical Engineer of the Year in 1991. Mr. Spils was a charter member of the Anchorage Nordic Ski Club and also enjoyed biking, snorkeling and fishing. His family said: "He considered his children his greatest life accomplishment. The lesson his children valued most was Dick's ability to treat all people with equal respect."

Mr. Spils is survived by his wife, Margaret of Anchorage; mother-in-law Mrs. T. Joseph Mannix of Massachusetts; daughters, Deanna of Anchorage and Carol of Washington D.C.; sons, Conrad of Anchorage, Daniel of Seattle and Gregory of Swaziland; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Mary; sister Louise Mills of Spokane, Wash.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Walt and Evelyn Olson of Plummer and DeMoyne and Aggie3 Gilchrist of Colfax, Wash.; one niece; and two nephews and nieces-in-law. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Brother Francis Shelter, 1021 E. Third Ave., Anchorage 99501. Arrangements were handled by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
