COLUMBUS - William H. Smith, Jr., whose hobbies were hunting and fishing, died Monday in Stillwater Community Hospital at age 71.
Mr. Smith was born in Joliet, a son of William and Elizabeth Smith. He was a saddle bronc rider in rodeos throughout Montana and Wyoming and was known by his family and friends as "one hell of a cowboy."
Mr. Smith married Ellen Brewington in 1933. He framed in the Joliet and Columbus area, worked for the WPA building the Cooke City highway, helped build canals, worked as a carpenter and truck driver on construction projects and as a park attendant for the Fish and Game Dept. His wife died in 1956.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Christina Herrig of Bullhead City, Ariz. and Mrs. Betty Lou St. Clair of East Helena; three brothers, Russell of Columbus, Sheldon of Portland, Ore., and Albert of Seattle; two sisters, Josie Miller of Roundup and Alice Amos of Whitehall; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Smith-Cashmore Memorial Chapel of Columbus with burial in Columbus Mountain View Cemetery.
