Stan was a member of Second Squad, 17th Cavalry (Air), Troop D (Delta Troop), 101st Airborne Division where he served as an 11D40, Armor Reconnaissance Specialist. He started his tour in Vietnam on 9/26/1969.
Stanley was killed in action during the battle of Fire Support Base (FSB) Ripcord. The FSB was located on a mountain side overlooking the A-Shau Valley close to the Cambodian border. The 23 day battle between the 101st Airborne Division and the North Vietnamese Army lasted from July 1st to July 23, 1970. It was the last major confrontation between United States ground forces and North Vietnam of the Vietnam War. Even though three Medals of Honor and six Distinguished Service Crosses were earned in the battle, the American public knew very little about the battle until 1985, when the FSB Ripcord Association was founded. Three Medals of Honor and six Distinguished Service Crosses were awarded to participants for actions during the battle. Betweeen 200-300 US servicemen were killed in this 23 days of combat against an estimated 30,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. The ememy losses are unknown but it is believed to be over 1000.
