Matilda Curtis is the daughter of William John Curtis (1809- ) and Matilda Engley (1814-1896). When Matilda married William Giggins Ashby 24 July 1871, at St. Leonard, Shoreditch, she listed her father's occupation as pencilmaker. (Her father, William John Curtis was born 25 Jan 1809 in Stroud, baptized 7 Jan 1810 in Shoreditch, and probably died before the 1871 census because his wife called herself widow on the return.)
Matilda and William had three daughters, Ellen Matilda Hazelwood (1871-1936), Harriett Ashby (1873-1949) and Amelia Harris (1875-1960).
At the time of her death, they were living on Angel Road, Edmonton. Matilda died 8 Nov. 1878 and was buried at All Saints, Edmonton, Enfield on 13 Nov. 1878.
Her widower went on to marry a second time to a widow Jane Louisa Hooper, née Sharpe. Jane and her youngest daughter Amelia Ada Hooper were in the 1881 census with William and his three daughters.
