Robert Blunk
1923-2023
DENVER, Colo. - Robert Blunk was a child of the Depression, an artist of the prairie, and a gentle and constant teacher of creativity.
He was born in Salyards, Kan. in 1923; a town that no longer exists. The first time he left home was when he joined the Marines and sailed to Guam to serve in World War II. At the war's end, he returned home, started his family, and took an art class at the University of Kansas that changed the course of his life. Art became his life. He became a teacher, a community activist, and a world traveler. All of these experiences informed his art.
After retiring from teaching, Bob reinvented himself. At 86 he married Diane Kelley and they moved to her hometown of Denver, Colo., where he had a Renaissance, devoting himself to painting and sculpture. His work appears in cities and private collections across the country.
At 97, he published a book of his life and recent work. And most recently, Bob's work was installed in a permanent exhibit at the 6th Floor Project Gallery in McCook, Neb.; seen by art lovers and art students from all over the country.
No doubt his accomplishments were profound and lasting, but what we'll miss most about Bob is his joyous humor, his curiosity, how he made a friend of every stranger and how he saw the beauty in the mundane. Bob passed on Oct. 21, 2023, at the age of 99. Now, he is part of that beauty.
