Elsie was born October 22, 1927 in Oplin, Texas to Claude A. and Marvel Lillian Ferguson Slaughter. She began working at the age of 14 and attended Abilene High School. On July 13, 1956, Elsie married Glendene Owens and the couple made Abilene their home. In addition to homemaker and mother, she worked for over 30 years at Osborne's Cleaners and later at Nu-Tone and at Tucker Cleaners. She enjoyed playing scrabble and was a member of the Abilene Scrabble Club.
Her parents, her husband and a brother, Claude A. Slaughter, Jr, preceded Mrs. Owens in death.
Survivors include: a daughter, Lynn and husband David Heiser of Abilene; a sister, Mary Jane Busby of Abilene; a brother, Scotty Slaughter of Hawley; three grandchildren, Adam and wife Melissa Heiser of Abilene, Nicholas Heiser of Arlington and Scott Heiser of Seattle, Washington; three great-grand-children, Michael, Alec and Brandon.
