Sullivan, Jan 12--The funeral of John W.Dawdy, who died of pneumonia Wednesday, was held this morning at 10 oclock at the family residence on S. Hamilton street, conducted by Rev.A.L. Conley, Pastor of the First Methodist church. He was assisted by Rev. U.W. Kilborn, pastor of the Christian church. Interment followed at Wright cemetery, southwest of Sullivan.
Mr. Dawdy was born in Shelby county, Sept. 20,1810 and was seventy one years old, eight months and twenty one days old at the time of his death.
His first wife was Miss Frances Knox, who died within six months after their marriage. Mr Dawdy enlisted in the army for the Civil war service immediately after her death and served three years being honorably discharged on account of disabilities.
In 1867 he married Miss Elizabeth Allison who died after bearing him three children, of which John Curtis is the only one now living.
He was married to his present wife Sarah Keller, March 18, 1902 who survives him.He is also survived by his stepson,Guy Keller, his own son John Curtis Dawdy, one brother Daniel J.Dawdy of Findlay two half sisters, Mrs. John Weathery and Mrs. James Noles, one half brother, Albert Walters and two grandchildren,Ruby and Harry.
Mr.Dawdy was one of the wealthiest retired farmers and stock raisers in Moultrie county and it is thought that at the time of his death he owned more acres of land in Moultrie county than any other man. He also leaves a large amount of city property.
He took sick after returning from the Chicago Livestock show where he contracted a cold which resulted in pneumonia. As a man he was well liked and respected by all his associates, both business and social.
