Lucy Mae was born Nov. 5, 1917 in Dustin, Oklahoma at the home of her parents, Isaac Austin Winn and Estella Mae Henry.
After graduating from high school, Lucy Mae borrowed $25 from her parents to attend college at what was East Central State Teachers College in Ada.
On Feb. 8, 1939, she married James Clifford McCallie, who preceded her in death on March 6, 1994. They were happily married for over 55 years.
She lived and worked with at least one family cooking, cleaning, and helping with their children to pay for her education.
She received her Bachelors of Education Degree in 1944 and later her Master’s Degree of Teaching in 1958. Lucy Mae’s first teaching position was at Lone Star School near Wetumka with a monthly salary of $75 per month where she taught grades 1st through 4th.
She and the children followed her husband, James Clifford, to the construction sites where he was working and she was usually able to find a teaching position anywhere they were.
She ended her career in Hughes County and in 1978-1979 she was named Teacher of the Year.
Lucy Mae touched the lives of many young students during her years of teaching.
After her retirement and the death of her husband, Lucy Mae and her sister, Eva traveled to many places including Alaska and Hawaii. She collected turtles from many cities and states.
In later years, she made many trips to Branson, with her last trip in the fall of 2014.
She loved to cook, clean and garden and enjoyed football, baseball, basketball, horse racing, and car racing.
Lucy Mae was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Wetumka First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son, James McCallie and wife, Nancy, of Eufaula; one grandchild, Michael Sickles and wife, Kandi; great grandchildren, Mathew and Kaylee; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Clifford McCallie; parents, Austin and Estella Winn; daughter, Phyllis Cartwright; brothers: George Winn, Everett Winn, and Monroe Winn; and sister, Eva Blevins.
A funeral service was held Sept. 22, 2015 at the Wetumka First Baptist Church with Claude Butler officiating. Burial followed at Dustin Cemetery under the direction of Hunn Black & Merritt Funeral Home & Crematory.
