James Stewart was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, May 18, 1826. He was trained as a printer at Leith before immigrating to the United States in 1844. Stewart enlisted as a private in the U S Army October 29, 1851. He advanced through the ranks and by the time he assumed command of Battery B, 4th U S Artillery on September 17, 1862 he was a 2nd Lieutenant. Stewart commanded Battery B for the remainder of the Civil War. He was breveted Captain on August 1, 1864 for gallant and meritorious service in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House and Major August 18, 1864 for gallant and meritorious service in the Battle on the Weldon Railroad On July 28, 1866 Stewart was promoted to Captain and assigned to the 18th Infantry. He retired March 20, 1879 and died onApril 19, 1905.
