Nellie was born to Albert Silas Holmes and Joanna (Paulson) Holmes. She married Fred Strauss on the 10th of April, 1903 in Green County, Wisconsin. They had four children: Inez Fredericka (Strauss) Spellman, Wilma Leone Naomi (Strauss) Strike, Burnarr Burnett Strauss and Burnell Albertus Strauss. They divorced when the children were grown. Nellie is buried next to her little granddaughter, Gay Lyn Spellman, whom she desparately tried to resusitate.
