Frederick Edward Burre worked hard all his life. He was the local blacksmith owning his own blacksmith shop. He also sold fuel and delivered to farmers in the field. When he wasn't working in his shop, he was tending his cattle, hogs and chickens. He was a man not big in statue, never knew a stranger, but welcomed and fed many a hobo who hopped of the MKT coming through Steedman. When he wasn't working, he did enjoy the company of friends and family. Often doing the soft toe tap and local dance contest with partner Gladys Vandelicht. He was a champion checker player, hosting many games in his shop. People enjoyed being around him, his smile and friendship was genuine. Many relatives would come to stay with Fred and Lela as they were generous hosts in the Depression times.
