Viona K. Schlotfeld was born April 20, 1920, in Pilger to John and Bertha (Buhrman) Bleckwehl. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peters Lutheran Church near Pender. She attended school in Thurston County and worked as hired help in different households before marrying Earl Schlotfeld on Sept. 10, 1940, in Ponca.
The couple spent their earlier years working on farms at Pender, Wisner, Atkinson, and Oakland before moving to Kennard around 1959, where they operated a filling station.
After her husband's death in April 1970, Mrs. Schlotfeld worked as a housekeeper at Dana College in Blair for 17 years, retiring in 1987. She moved to Blair in 2001. She was a member of the Blair Eagles, Emmaus Luteran Church in Kennard, and Ruth Circle.
Mrs. Schlotfeld's family meant everything to her, as did her friends. She loved mailing cards and letters for every occasion. If there wee small children in the family, she liked to include pictures of animals cut from magazines in the mail, which the children looked forward to receiving.
She enjoyed playing cards, especially with the children who would come in and play; their visits would make her day. She also enjoyed dancing, baking and making treats for family and friends when she lived in Kenanrd.
She made baby quilts for all her grandchildren, great- grandchildren, and even a couple for her great-great grandchildren.
She used to say that Dana College saved her life when she was left a widow, and said it was like her second home. She loved the people and working there.
While living at Shepherd's Village, she enjoyed playing bingo, going to Bible study and chapel, where she enjoyed the special music.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Mary of Fremont, and Layton and Sandra of Bailey, Colo.; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Jerry Surber of Logan, Iowa; son-in-law, Clinton Gaver of Norwood, Mo.; sister, Arlene Manning of West Point; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, also several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carole; and brother, Henry.
