Randine was born in Våler, Hedmark, Norway in 1873, the second child of Christopher and Andrine [Knudtson] Halvorson. On July 4, 1878, she, her brothers, Halvor and Otto, her parents and other relatives boarded a ship at Christiana, Norway, to begin their journey to America. Her mother died in 1880 when Randine was about seven years old and her brothers were then aged nine-Halvor, four-Otto 4 and Knute only 4 months old.
