Seaman Addison met his wife Lynne Larson while attending the University of Minnesota and married her in 1965. Douglass traded in his "Seaman" moniker for "Officer" when he joined the Willmar Police Force in 1966 and served for seven years. He spent the remainder of his working years as the Supervisor of Central Counting at Metro Transit until his retirement in 2001.

While in retirement Douglass wrote two books about railroading, "Great Northern Railway Ore Docks of Lake Superior Photo Archive (2002, Enthusiast Books) and "Kelly Lake to Allouez: Transporting Iron Ore on the Great Northern Railroad (2009, Expert Publishing Inc.) and volunteered at the Great Northern Historical Society."
