Richard was born on his parent's farm in South Gower, Ontario.
In 1899, he moved with his brother, Asa to Saskatchewan and from there to Vancouver, BC.
From about 1901 to 1914, he built approximately 12 house in East Vancouver but after World War I, property values dropped and Richard had to dispose of his homes at the prevailing rates.
He was married to Emma Louise Bell and together they had 9 children.
He was a Janitor for Woodwards Department Stores until his death.
He is buried in the Beach Family Plot without a headstone except his Mother and sister.

His son, Albert Wittingham, died on February 10, 1985 and was cremated - location of ashes is unknown.
