SHELLEY, ID -- Frank Bush Sermon, 92, of Shelley, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2008, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. Those of us who knew and loved Frank thought of him as a John Wayne-like character with a gentler disposition. He represented pioneer values, enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, and had a love of all things western.

He was born May 15, 1915, to Henry Sermon Jr. and Louise Elizabeth Bush Sermon, in Ririe, Idaho. On December 28, 1936, he married Doris Christensen on Butler Island, near Ririe. Together they had four children. Frank and Doris made their home is Shelley since 1971.

Like the characters John Wayne played on film, Frank also held some uncompromisingly simple values: faith, hard work, and love of family. Frank not only believed in the value of hard work, as demonstrated by the many jobs he held, but he also lived it every day of his life. He enjoyed the sense of accomplishment he felt from a good day's work. Frank's rugged individualism carried over to his personal spiritual path, and he could often be found studying the Bible at his desk. In addition to reading the Bible, Frank also loved reading history books, especially books about Idaho history, or places he had worked or visited. He loved his family and friends unconditionally and believed in the Golden Rule of treating others as you'd like to be treated.

Frank began working for his father as soon as he could pick up a milk pail; this early farm work helped form his incredible work ethic. He held a wide variety of jobs, from farmer, to rancher, to construction worker. He was particularly proud of his work in construction: specifically, he loved to recall his part in building the Ririe Dam, the EBR-2 at the INL Site, the American Falls Dam, and numerous major road projects throughout the West. He was very proud to be an honorary member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Even in retirement, Frank kept himself busy caring for his pasture, orchard, and garden in Shelley.

At heart, Frank was always a cowboy and most of us will remember him in his boots, jeans, western shirt, and hat. He loved horses especially, from the time he was a boy, until the death of his beloved Chief. He loved camping, fishing, hunting, and simply being in the outdoors whenever he had the chance. His home and yard were filled with memorabilia that reflected his rustic tastes. Western music was one of the great joys in Frank's life. He loved old cowboy trail songs in the spirit of Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and the Sons of the Pioneers. He later discovered country and bluegrass music and enjoyed performers like Bill Monroe, Johnny Cash, and Merle Haggard.

In retirement, he cherished his moments picking guitar with anyone who would pull up a stool beside him; all of whom he soon called friends. We will all miss Frank, his gentle nature, and his stories of a simpler, and some would say, better time.
