Thomas Jefferson Shadden was an Oregon Trail Pioneer (1842). He, his wife Martha and their children then traveled to California in 1843, with the Lansford Hasting's party by muleback. Thomas and his family are noted as early California settlers by the Native Daughters of the Golden West and the California State Library. T.J. spent time at Sutter's Mill during the California Gold Rush.

He served as a mounted rifleman under John Charles Fremont, and is listed as having been paid over $700.00 for his services in the United States Federal Congressional Record of 1859-1860. He later returned to Oregon, with $185,000 in gold, and was an early settler in the McMinnville, Oregon area.
