Palestine was the son of Nancy Hammons and David Davis Broughton. His siblings include Meade Broughton, Harriet Booth, Daniel G Broughton, Maria Twedell, and Parmelia J McBee. He married Elizabeth Fisher in 1853. She died two years later and then he married Mary Simpson, who first went by "Polly" and then possibly went by "Mollie." They had two daughters, Mary and Nancy (Anna). Palestine then became a soldier in the Army's 23rd Infantry during the Civil War. After the War ended, he married Mrs. Mary Drace Robinett, widow of Rufus William Robinett, and then he died in 1902.
