He was the son of Adam and Mary "Polly" (Kessler) Allison.
He married Margaret E. Woodrow on March 2, 1862.
In 1860 he is listed as a miller.
He was 5'10", had black hair and dark eyes and lived in the York Borough.

He enlisted in Newville Cumberland County as a private in Co. E 130th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry enlisting August 6, 1862. He was wounded in the right thigh at the battle of Fredericksburg December 13, 1862, but honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863. Despite the wound, he also enlisted and mustered into state service in Cumberland County July 20, 1863, as a private with Co. F, 1st Pennsylvania (Ramsey's) Battalion, and promoted to corporal July 30. He re-enlisted and mustered into federal service January 10, 1864, as a sergeant with Co. D, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

After the war he has the following children. Charles Edwin (b. 09/22/62), Bertha Jane "Birdie" (b. 10/12/66 - married Henry Helman), John M. (b. 04/24/67), George L. (04/24/68 - but he may have been John's twin), Harry (b. 11/16/70), Lillie A. (b. 11/15/72 - married George A. Wagner), Loy (b. @1874), and Maud M. (b. 06/13/77 - married a Wiest)

In 1891, he weighed 230 lbs., a twenty-six-pound weight gain in three years. Cause of death is listed as "dilatation [or the] heart" with "cardiac asthma" a contributing factor. October 31 is also reported as his birthday.
