Edith Elizabeth "Liz" South, 89 of Roanoke and formerly of Clyde, died Wednesday at a Denton care center.

Interment will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Potosi Cemetery with Rev. James Holman officiating, under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Clyde.

Liz was born September 11, 1918 in Blevins, Arkansas to Tholbert and Gertrude (White) Smith. She attended school in Buffalo Gap. Liz continued her education, becoming an X-ray technician. She worked at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas. Liz also worked as a nurse at the Professional Building for Dr. Buzbee. She was the widow of James Daniel (Dan) South, whom she married in 1971 in Clyde. He preceded her in death in January, 2008. She lived in the Clyde and Buffalo Gap area during her lifetime. Liz was a member of the American Registry of X-Ray Technicians, the American Society of X-ray Technicians. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clyde.

She is survived by her children, Mary Lu and Ron Goffrier of Roanoke, Bob and Donna South of Abilene, Dana and David Pope of Wimberley, Deb and Joel Smith of Ramstein, Germany,and sisters-in-law Helen South of Clyde, Doris Smith of Abilene and Faye Bristow of Mesa, Arizona. Her grandchildren are Jonathan Hurley of Roanoke, Texas, Josh Goffrier, also of Roanoke, Terry and Rusty Ledford of Clyde, Brian and Julie South of Austin, Scott Pope of Stephenville, Chris and Stephanie South of Harlingen, Andrea and Mark Gonzales of Wimberley, Danny South of Austin, Patrick and Candice South of Abilene and Suzanne Smith of Ramstein, Germany. Liz is also survived by great-grandchildren Tristen Ledford, Sutton, Conner, Alexa, Jackson and Avery South and Drew and Marcus Gonzales. Surviving nieces and nephews include Timothy Ray Smith, Jan and Ray Dukes, Tanya Dukes, Julia Moore, Tom South, Jan Hicks, Joe Don South, Greg South, Jim Barr, Brenda Barr Meckly, Becky Estill and Johnny Simmons. She is survived as well by many cousins and a host of friends.

Liz was preceded in death by her husband, and four brothers, Terry Doyle Smith, Roy Hilton Smith, Tholbert Smith, Jr., and Harold Floy Smith.
