Arthusa Susan Anderson was born on 9/11/1845 in Vermont to Charles Anderson and Elizabeth Steinhart. Elizabeth Steinhart Anderson went on to remarry around 1849 to Harrison Benton, with whom she had two more children: Gertrude and Hjalmer.

On 12/28/1866, Arthusa Anderson and David Hughes (1835-1880?) in Winneshiek, Iowa. Over the course of their marriage, David and Arthusa would have four children: Harvey (1867-1886), Adam (1872-1957), Cassie (1873-1944) and Thomas (1877-1945). Around 1880, David Hughes disappeared, and it was assumed he was dead. On 5/13/1883 in Pepin County, Arthusa would remarry to Thomas Stokes (1806-1889), an elderly farmer. Following the death of Mr. Stokes, Arthusa remarried to a man with the name Wordman, but nothing else is known of this marriage. On 10/5/1901, Arthusa would marry Charles Olmstead Betts (1848-1920). The couple spent the rest of their lives in Menomonie, where Arthusa would die of heart disease and asthma.
