Mary Jane McMannis was born in Hemp Ridge, Kentucky in 1847. She was the daughter of Samuel Webb McMannis and Charlotte Shelburne and was the Granddaughter of Samuel McMannis and Mary Webb, and Benjamin Shelburne and Joanna Webb.
Mary Jane married Hezekiah Briscoe on 4 December 1868 in Sulivan County, Indiana. The children born to this marriage were: Esther Josephine (1872), John McClain (1875), Mamie (1879), Enoch (1882) and Carl (1885).
Mary Jane died in Grand Saline area, Texas in 1918. She is buried near her son Enoch Briscoe in the Creagleville Cemetery near Grand Saline, Texas. It was reported that Enoch dug his mother's grave by hand and buried her in rainy weather as her sister Cathrine and family watched from afar due to the fear of the contagious flue epidemic that was running rampant.
