Raymond walked to the Cameron Bear Creek School- house for grade school, graduated from Bozeman High School and attended Montana State. In 1942 he left college to join the war ef- fort. Ray's dream of becoming a pilot was fulfilled in the Navy, where he became a flight instruc- tor earning the rank of Lieutenant JG. After the war he returned to the ranch and teamed up with his father. Raymond had the youth- ful drive necessary and worked long and hard to build Carkeek Ranches into a very respectable Madison Valley Ranch. In addi- tion to ranching, he was a founding board member of the First Madison Valley Bank and oper- ated an air ambulance/air charter business in Ennis and Palm Des- ert, Calif. He sold the ranch in the 70s and moved to West Yellow- stone where he had a real estate brokerage business. When Ray retired, he moved to Bozeman where he and Patty ran a bed and breakfast for a number of years.
Raymond and his first wife, Donna Joiner Carkeek Skiles (deceased) had three children.
Ray Carkeek had that Mon- tana spirit through and through. He was a rancher, a pilot and a friend to a great many. He always thought the best of people and never had a bad word to say about anyone. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He loved the Madison Valley and will be returned to Ennis in a graveside ceremony at the En- nis cemetery on June 30, 2014, at 4 p.m.
