Wayne Carl Ackley, 72, passed away on December 15, 2019, at 12:03 p.m. of his serviceconnected renal cancer at Togus Veterans Hospital.

He was born on July 19, 1947 in Whitneyville, Maine. He was the oldest son of Willard Omar Ackley and Donna Frances Drisko Ackley. He grew up on the family farm on Canal Road and as a child traveled with his parents to New Mexico and California. Wayne graduated from Machias Memorial High School and entered the Army in 1967 where he worked as a mechanic on airfields in Vietnam. After completing his service, he returned to Whitneyville where he worked in the woods with his father, managed blueberry ground, and worked as a mechanic at local garages. Wayne loved the outdoors and fishing for salmon. He also was an avid ham radio operator making contacts all over the world. Wayne married late in life and was a devoted husband to his wife, Nancy. He moved to Marshfield in 2013 and enjoyed working with goats and chickens, and loved his dogs, Duchess, Lucy and Mandy. He spent many hours teaching them commands in German. Wayne loved his many cats including the feral cat Rainbow and her three kittens Angel, Spot, and Buttercup. In the last years of his life, he would take afternoon naps with his "wildcats" on the sofa. Wayne was a member of Down East Salmon Federation and supported the efforts to restore salmon using the techniques of Dr. Peter Gray. He was predeceased by his parents; his younger brother, Scott; and his Minnesota aunts, Myrna and Joyce. He is survived by his wife and caregiver, Nancy; Jennifer and Larry Chase of Steuben; and his much-loved granddaughters, Mia and Mya. He is also survived by his uncle Clayton and his family of Milford; his aunts, Gladys Caron of Texas, Sylvia Wyman and her family of Brunswick, and Avon Brown and family of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He also is survived by special neighbors, Danny and Janet Scott or Marshfield; and many cousins and friends in Maine, Texas, and Minnesota.

Burial will be in May in the Whitneyville Cemetery, and there will be a graveside service followed by refreshments in the Whitneyville Community Building. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wreaths Across America, who assisted Wayne with rides to appointments, The Ark Animal Shelter, or the Whitneyville Library.
