1925 - 2014
Alvie Denver "Troy" Slape, son of Luther Troy and Bessie Mae Slape, was born in Cleveland, OK on June 20, 1925. He departed this life Saturday, June 21, 2014, in Mercy Medical Center, Redding at the age of 89.
In Dec. 1949, he married Aileen Bennett and together they had a daughter and two sons.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Ruth Lealla Berry and Geraldine June McDaniel.
Alvie is survived by his wife, Aileen of Shasta Lake; daughter, Monica Corp (Dennis) of Shasta Lake; and two sons, Larry Slape (Ginger) and Michael Slape (Darcia) of Redding; five grandsons, Aaron Corp of Longmont, CO, Trenton Johnson of Anderson, Denver Slape of Cottonwood, Dejon Slape of Shasta Lake, and Dace Slape of Redding; five granddaughters, Kimberly Finley of Redlands, CA, Trisha Ferguson of Redding, Stacey Slape of Redding, Kara Laycock of Beaumont, CA, Roz Storey of Boise, ID, and six great-grandchildren.
Alvie graduated from high school in Cleveland in June 1944. He then began working in the shipyards of Richmond, CA. He was inducted into the Army in July 1945. After his discharge in January 1947, he went to work at Shasta Dam as a welder. He returned to Oklahoma to attend Oklahoma A&M in July 1948. On December 13, 1949 he married Aileen and they returned to California. He worked again at Shasta Dam for the Bureau of Reclamation. In October 1951, he began working for US Plywood/Novaply Division. In 1964 he worked for the Pipe Fitters Local #662 as a welder. He retired on July 1, 1990. The last 14 years he worked for the Pipe Fitters Local in Manteca, CA. He and Aileen (Granny) returned to Shasta Lake in December of 1990.
Alvie was ordained as a Deacon at the First Baptist Church of Central Valley in 1974 and served until his death. He was a member of Northpointe Baptist. He loved God and his church. He was a loving husband, father, and grandad. He was a hard worker and an excellent welder. One of his favorite pastimes was playing golf. He had an amazing sense of humor and never met a stranger. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by all of those who knew and loved him.
Viewing will be held Tuesday, July 1st from 2 to 7 pm at Lawncrest Memorial Park.
A celebration of Alvie's life will be held at Lawncrest Memorial Park, 1522 East Cypress Ave., Redding, CA, on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at 9:00 am with graveside services to follow. After the services, a fellowship luncheon and a time of sharing memories will be held in the Lawncrest Hospitality Room.
