Henson Kraft Is Dead at 93; Met Lincoln

Henson Christopher Kraft, 93, who once shook hands with President Lincoln, died Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Ellen Tress, 4605 Highland Ave., Bethesda, Md.

Although Mr. Kraft was not yet 10 years old when he met President Lincoln at his second inauguration, he recalled the event clearly and spoke often of it.

A native of Washington, he remembered Lincoln's assassination and often recalled the days when Washington was still a small town and Pennsylvania ave. a "mud swamp."

After graduation from elementary school, Mr. Kraft entered his father's plastering business. After his father's death, he operated it with three brothers until his retirement about 20 years ago.

He was well known as an ardent fisherman. When age finally limited his activities, he listened to the radio from morning to night and read the newspapers through completely to keep informed.

He had lived with Mrs. Tress since last January, moving there from the home of a son, Frederick B. Kraft, of 4601 Highland Ave., Bethesda, with whom he had resides since the death of his wife, Annie Heller Kraft, 33 years ago.

Besides his son and daughter, he is survived by another son, George Kraft, of 2632 Monroe St. ne.; a brother, Robert Kraft, of Seat Pleasant, Md; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the W. Reuben Pumphrey funeral home, Bethesda. Burial will be in Congressional Cemetery.

Six of his grandchildren will be pall bearers. They are: Henson Tress, Frederick Kraft, Jr., Raymond Kraft, Richard Kraft, Harold Boss and George Boss.

He was the son of Paul Edward Kraft, Sr. and Mary Ellen Brown Kraft.
