Lawella Nielson Obituary

Lawella Jane Nielson passed away surrounded by family and friends on January 22, 2024. Lawella was born October 23, 1938, in Vernal Utah to Lydia Ainge Evans and Martin Alexander Evans. She was the 3rd of eight children. She graduated from Uintah High School with the class of 1956. She married David Karren and had two boys, Mark and Robert then later divorced. She then married Bob James Nielson on May 23rd, 1965, in Elko Nevada and gained two daughters, Susan K. Dickson and Leah Jan Tingey.

Lawella was raised on Big Brush Creek and for a time in a two-room cabin by the Green River with her mischievous and rowdy brothers and sisters.

Lawella had various jobs helping to support her two sons until she married Bob Nielson and went to work for the Utah Division of Water Rights where she worked for 25 years before retiring.

She enjoyed hunting, hunting and hunting and after that playing the guitar, oil painting, woodworking, camping, horseback riding, traveling, reading Harlequin Romances and Louis Lamour Westerns, sewing, quilting, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren. She loved having lunch weekly with her best friend Naione Snyder and every now and then with the women she went to high school with. She also enjoyed having lunch with the retired Fish and Game guys.

No matter how rough the going got for her physically, she was always doing something.
There wasn't a time that she wasn't fixing a roof, walking dogs, shoveling snow before anyone could help her, painting a deck, shed or her home. She always had the patience to include her grandsons in these activities and thrilled in the opportunity of teaching them the value of hard work and helping others. Sometimes with a little tough love to go with it.

Lawella was involved with many clubs and organizations in the community, many times as the secretary/treasurer. Some of the more notable ones were the Rod and Gun Club, Butch Cassidy Outlaw Trail Ride (Horses), Uintah County Historical Society, and the Uintah Basin Chapter of the Utah State Archaeology Society.

She is survived by her children Robert W. (Madeleine) Nielson, Susan K. (Curtis) Dickson, son-in-law Jeff Tingey, Grandchildren, Buck aka Robert M. (Misty) Nielson, Brett G. Nielson, Levi M. (Jessie) Nielson, Travis A. (Jennie) Karren, Michael (Jared) Dickson, Sharra (Bob) Gray, Jennifer (Steve) Stoker, Mikelle (Mark) Jackson, Samantha (Justin) Moore. Her sisters Christella Parrish, Nila Kidd, and Lucretia Greenhalgh. Brothers James Evans, Ferrington (Dorothy) Evans and Asa (Carol) Evans. 14 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Also special friends Dewey and Helen Paulson. And last but not least her dog Sadie.

Lawella is proceeded in death by her husband Bob James Nielson, son Mark A. Karren, daughter Leah Jan Tingey, grandson Nyals Bodine, granddaughter Amanda Bodine and great granddaughter Morgan Gray.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Happy hunting mom.

Special thanks to the staff at Landmark Assisted Living-Vernal, Canyon Home Health, Mike and Georgia Vanderlinden, Dave Barton and Judy McCormick. Also her sister Lucritia Greenhalph for caring for her dog Sadie.
