AKER - Connie Jim Askin, 54, of Baker, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at his home north of Baker.

He was born May 24, 1948, in Miles City, the youngest child of C.L. and Shirley Belle (Ruenholl) Askin. Connie grew up and attended schools in the Ismay and Baker area. He entered the U.S. Coast Guard in 1967 and was honorably discharged in 1970.

Connie enjoyed his years as a radio broadcaster in West Yellowstone and in Baker. He went to school in 1998 at NW Technical Institute in Portland, Ore. Connie retired in 1999 due to his disability.

He moved back to Baker to be with his family following an automobile accident. He was very dedicated to his family. In his spare time he enjoyed riding horses and in his younger years liked riding saddle broncos and riding bulls. He also enjoyed both water skiing and snow skiing.

Being the baby of the family, his siblings and children will account for his sense of determination. He had a strong entrepreneurial spirit within him as well. His many inventive ideas included the "Robo Roper." Connie also shared many fond memories with his bands over the years.

He is preceded in death by his parents C.L. "Gramps" and Shirley Belle Askin.

A Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker. Funeral Services will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, at the Chapel of Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker. A luncheon will be served following the services. Burial will then take place at the Askin Family Cemetery north of Baker with Military Rites presiding. Stevenson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
