Dr. Janie Bradley was born September 21, 1938, in Jackson, MS to Raleigh and Aetna Mills Morgan. Upon Mrs. Morgan's death in childbirth, Mr. Morgan and the baby moved into the home of Mrs. Morgan's sister and brother-in-law, Virgilee and Frank Arnold, who adopted Janie when her birth father died before she was two years old.

Dr. Janie Bradley was in the first graduating class of Murrah High School. She entered Mississippi University for Women with the class of 1958 and was class president her sophomore year. After attending Millsaps College in the summer, she graduated from the "W" in 1959 with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. She received her Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Mississippi with an emphasis in Reading in 1970 and 1973, respectively. She did post-doctoral study at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

In 1951, she became a Christian at a Billy Graham Crusade in Jackson. In each place she lived she was active in her church—First Baptist Church Jackson, First Baptist Church Hattiesburg, Chapel of the Campus in Baton Rouge, and First Baptist Church Cleveland. She taught adult Sunday school classes for over sixty years and was involved in missions through women's circles. She was also involved with the Women's Resource Center of Cleveland.

She taught kindergarten through sixth grade in Natchez, Meridian, and Jackson Public Schools, Jackson Academy (primary grades coordinator), Hattiesburg, and Baton Rouge. While pursuing her graduate degrees, she taught reading courses at USM and was a full-time faculty member from 1973-1985. She was a professor at Delta State University from 1989 until her retirement in 2000. She was the Barksdale Reading Professor at DSU for four years and continued as a reading consultant Barksdale Reading Institute for several years. Barksdale published her material Alpha Buddies: Phonics From A to Z and distributed 3,000 copies of it to Mississippi teachers with training provided by BRI staff.

She had several articles published in professional journals and delivered numerous presentations for professional organizations, parent groups, and education classes. At various times during her career, she was a member of the International Reading Association, Mississippi Reading Association (former president), Delta Reading Council (charter member and first president), Delta Kappa Gamma, and Phi Delta Kappa. She was part of a children's literature study tour to England and Scotland with IRA, and later led a study tour to England, during which she saw Diana, Princess of Wales, at her first public appearance from a Buckingham Palace balcony. She also served as editor for several books in both non-fiction and Biblical studies as well as numerous dissertations.

She was a life member of Junior Auxiliary. She was a member of Trés Gai and First Class luncheon clubs in Jackson. Dr. Janie Bradley traveled out of the U.S.A extensively to places such as The Virgin Islands, Israel, Egypt, Hawaii, and Europe. She and her husband, Dr. Milton Bradley, traveled to all the fifty states in the U.S. in the first ten years of their marriage beginning in 1990 as well as to seventeen foreign countries on six continents.
