Mrs. Mary Anne Powell Sutphin of Galax, Virginia, was called home in the morning hours of Thursday, January 18th, 2024, at the age of 87 -- just two days before her 88th birthday.

Mary Anne was born in Darbyville, Pickaway County, Ohio in 1936 to Thomas Ward Allen Powell and Grace Lucille Gilmore.

Though she moved many times throughout her life, she considered Carroll County, Virginia her home and was a proud retiree of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, May Juel Sutphin (known to Dugspur locals as "Joe"); sister, Norma Jean Marrow; and brother, Thomas Bub Powell.

Mary Anne spent decades researching the genealogy of the Sutphin family and was a treasure trove of knowledge who helped local families better understand their lineage.

She made many significant contributions to the genealogy field and lovingly referred to her time spent researching as "some of the most enjoyable" years of her life. Only two days before her death, she could still recall with precision the name and year of the very first Sutphin to come to the United States in 1651.

It comes as no surprise that Mary Anne was also a matriarch to whom there can be no comparison.

She is survived by her four children: Debra Yvonne Bond, of Hillsville; Michael Ward Sutphin and his wife April, of Hillsville; Donna Kaye Armentrout and her husband, Barry, of Hillsville; and Moy Joel ("JoJo") Sutphin and his wife, Dawn, of Christiansburg.

Mary Anne is also survived by ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren;

and sister, Jane Bailey of Circleville, OH.

She loved her family unconditionally and faithfully, and some of the last words she spoke were recalling many of her precious memories with them.

The world is a dimmer place in the absence of her grace, her wisdom, and her love.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 22, 2024 at the Pine View Cemetery in Dugspur, Virginia.

The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her make a donation to St. Jude's Children hospital, a cause very dear to Mary Anne's heart.

Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
