Resident of San Jose
Jack M. Baldwin passed peacefully at home on Nov. 10, 2012, in San Jose. He was well loved and was known for his humor, creativity, and passion for outdoor sports. Born one of ten children to Charles and Florence Baldwin in Lansing, Michigan on Oct. 9, 1925, Jack was a WWII veteran who served two years with the US Marines 1943-1945, providing field radio support in the Pacific War. In 1950, Jack graduated from Michigan State College with honors in Electrical Engineering, earning awards of Phi Beta Kappa and other honor societies, and soon joined IBM. In the early 60's, Jack was part of the group that developed the core memory for the revolutionary IBM 360/20 mainframe computer. Later, he became a senior engineer and manager within the division developing the hard disk drive. Retiring from IBM in 1984, Jack was able to devote time to his passions of golfing, boating, and building intricate model ships, airplanes, and steam engines.
He is survived by his loving wife Doris of 33 years; his children by previous marriage, Doug, Brad, and Sheryl; Doris' children Danny, Nicky, and Steven; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jack will be missed by all. A private memorial will be held Dec. 1 along the shoreline nearby Seacliff State Beach, one of his favorite places.
