Lawrence "Larry" E. Bales – born December 7, 1936 to Floyd and Elizabeth Bales and passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Born in the home of his grandparents, Hayden and Mary Cordy Bales. Lawrence was raised by his father and Pauline "Polly" Bales. It was she who taught him the values of life. He gave his life to Christ at the age of 12 and was a member of Ramsey Heights until he moved his letter of membership to Guston Baptist church in 1982, where he was an active member for 33 years. He served this church as a Sunday School teacher for 20 years. He was a deacon, trustee, music director and a friend to every member until he moved back to Knoxville in 2015. After returning to Knoxville, he moved his church letter and became a member of Roseberry Baptist Church, where he served until his death. Larry was a U.S. Army veteran who served his country with two tours of service in Vietnam, one tour in Korea, and a number of tours in Germany before retiring after 22 ½ years. He taught in Jefferson County, KY for 4 years. He then worked with the Louisville District Corps of Engineers Real Estate for 21 years before retiring in 2007.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Norma Bales and wife of 22 years, Jackie G. Bales; parents, Floyd W. Bales, Elizabeth Bales, and Pauline "Polly" Bales, who raised him; brothers, David L. Bales, Ronnie Joe Bales, and Floyd Allen Bales; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hayden Bales, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. "Rob" and Zelma Murray, who were two of the best in-laws in the world.
The family will receive friends 11:30 AM-1:30 PM on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at funeral home followed by a procession to East TN Veterans Cemetery-John Sevier Hwy. for a 2:00 PM graveside service with Pastor Greg Jones officiating. Military Honors will be provided by Volunteer State Honor Guard.
