Alan Bonine, 77, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 6, 2024. Visitation with family present to greet friends will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Thursday, January 11, 2024 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory in Sioux Falls. A time of sharing will follow the visitation at 6:00 p.m.

Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 12, 2024, at the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation to the American Heart Association.

Alan Clark Bonine was born on October 24, 1946, to Robert & Audrey (Ekman) Bonine in Vermillion, SD. Alan died unexpectedly at home on January 6, 2024. Alan grew up in the Beresford area and graduated from Beresford High School in 1964. He went to college in Springfield, SD and studied Electronics while there. After graduation, Alan worked as a college professor at Springfield College where he taught an Electronics class. Alan also served in the Navy during the Vietnam War (stationed in Newfoundland) as a Radioman.

When the college in Springfield closed, Alan then started working for Martin & Associates as a telephone switch programmer and worked there for 39 years. He then continued his career with Vantage Point as a telephone switch programmer until the time of his death.

Alan married Carol Coy Hartman on April 1, 1989, in Mitchell, SD.

Alan was an individual that would help anyone that needed assistance. He was kind and full of knowledge. He had a Tesla Y that he was very proud of and anyone that would ask him about his Tesla – soon was in the driver's seat – taking a test drive, with Alan showing them all the bells and whistles! Alan loved to travel and in October of 2023, he drove his Tesla to California to see relatives, with Carol flying and meeting up to travel the rest of the way with him in the Tesla. In recent months, a favorite pass time of his became Dominoes and as a family, we would spend many hours learning and playing the game – only for him to win most of the time. His cat, Dempsey, was another conversation he loved to have with anyone and everyone and of course, 30 pictures of Dempsey accompanied the conversation!

Alan, to family and friends, was affectionately called "Grandpa". Grandpa was our "go to" person. He knew a little bit about everything – including fixing stoves, washers and dryers and cleaning vacuums! He loved putting "dates" on items of when he purchased them – a quirk that we have come to appreciate! One of Grandpa's favorite words that he used frequently was "Jeepers!". There will certainly be a void in our lives.

Alan is survived by his wife Carol of 34 years; sons, Tod (Connie) Hartman of Sioux Falls, SD and Troy Hartman of Salem, Oregon; grandchildren, Hannah Hartman, Ashley Hartman, Tim (Chantel) Hartman, Cody Hartman, Emma Hartman, Tyler Hartman; 13 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Petrice Rowley and Tammy Smith of Pearl River, Louisiana; brothers-in-law, John Smith of Pearl River, Louisiana and Marlyn Gravning of Sioux Falls, SD; nephews and nieces; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Audrey Bonine of Beresford, SD; sister, Carolyn Marie Bonine, Leifgen, Verly, Carlson of Marshall, MN; brother-in-law, Noel Rowley of Slidell, Louisiana; and sisters-in-law, Thelma Gravning and Valinda Wilson.
