William Pollock Warfield was the son of Dr. Elisha Warfield, Jr. and Maria Barr. He was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky and educated at Transylvania University. One of his classmates and friends was Jefferson Davis. In 1835, he married Maria Elizabeth Griffith in Natchez, Mississippi. The couple had nine children that survived to adulthood. William, along with his brother Thomas, owned and operated cotton plantations along the Mississippi River. William's plantation was within the Laconia Circle Levee in Desha County, Arkansas while his brother based his operations out of Greenville, Mississippi. By 1862, William's family was displaced by the Civil War. After the dust settled, half of his children remained in the South while the other half made their way to California.
