Susan Renee Bentz Obituary

In the tiny town of Hailey, Idaho that no longer exists, (as in it is no longer tiny) Susan R. Smith was born Jan. 17, 1952,on the second floor of the old J.C. Fox building, the original hospital for the community. It was a tough winter, where it snowed 8 feet of snow that year. During her birth Dr. Fox suffered a heart attack. Dr. Hawks was called in to finish the delivery, and that was the last delivery by Dr. Fox as he passed away a few months later.

She came home to a Hailey family corner that was to be her humble home all her life. When Susan was nearly three years old she contacted measles, which was a near epidemic in those times. A new but relatively untested drug was administered, which effectively took her away her ability to hear.

Her parents and next door grandparents worked hard to give the little girl as normal a life as they were able to do. There were many trips to LA by train and drives to Salt Lake City for years of speech therapy, and lip-reading in different institutions. But she still enjoyed her youth as she was surrounded by many loyal friends, some of whom she closely had up until her death. She also had many cousins she drew close to all her life.

Having a bubbly and outgoing personality, Susan found popularity in high school. Also, with her father working for Sun Valley, Susan enjoyed skating and skiing. She was active to the hilt having been part of the Campfire Girls and the High School drill team. She left behind scrap books to attest her involvement in nearly everything this valley offered her.

Through her mother's popular beauty shop she met Ann Southern, among others like Bette Davis. Through her grandfather she met and had lunch with Jimmy Stewart and his wife. Cary Grant lent her a dime so she could call her father after a sour date. She even had a short pen pal relationship with one of the Kennedy boys.

When Susan was 16, she had a serious car accident with a boy who was driving. Her face was tore wide open as she went through the windshield. After operations and plastic surgery months later, she mended remarkably and she remained as popular as ever.

Susan married William C. Bentz in the Idaho Falls LDS temple, in 1974. They remained married and soulmates for 50 years. She remained active in the church throughout her life with different callings, including the Cub Scouts. Through her daughter's involvement in the high school band she helped form a band boosters club. She also became heavily involved in her family genealogy for years.

Susan is survived by her husband William Bentz, a beloved daughter, LeAnn Gelskey, and her husband Brad of Emmett, Idaho, two equally loved sons, Ronald W. Bentz, of Hailey, and Andrew D. Bentz and his companion, Wolfie, of Silverdale, Washington. Then she is survived by a dear cousin, Dr. Steven Shirts, who was more a lifelong brother to her. Then too is her dear uncle, Monte Shirts and his wife Mary Lou, of Washington, Utah. She is proceeded by her parents, Ronald D. Smith and Vera "Ormae" Shirts, and her grandparents Bert D. Shirts, and Ilda Mae Lance. She will be laid to rest next to many of the Shirts clan at the Hailey Cemetery, having once all been residents of the tiny town since 1922. Proceeding her are numerous beloved dogs, of which she loved as much as any child.

The funeral under the direction of Zeyer Funeral Chapel in Nampa will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 121 No. Canyon Street, Nampa, Idaho on Friday the 29th of December at 11:00. There will be a graveside service at the Hailey, Idaho Cemetery the next day on Saturday the 30th at 1:00PM.

Susan is leaving behind boxes of hearing aids, of which she endured having to use all her life. In heaven she'll never need them to hear again.
