Pauline was the third of nine children born to Lawrence Arthur and Rosa Jane (Hoyt) Rudiger. She graduated from Clay Center high school in 1950. She married James E. "Jim" Hanlin in Clay Center in 1952. They had five children: Dorothy, Jayne, Judy, Terry and Paul. The family moved to Fairbury, Nebraska around 1960. Jim and Pauline divorced in 1975. Polly moved to Kearney, Nebraska around 1981 and spent the remainder of her life there.

She will be remembered for her welcoming smile, her beautiful singing, her unique quilts stitched lovingly by hand for her family and friends, and her love for all her children - those were born to her, and those she befriended.

Just as I am, thou wilt receive,
wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
because thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
