RICH SQUARE, NC – Floyd Collins ("Dick") Nelson passed from this life on December 27, 2023, at the age of 96. Born to Mamie and Buxton Nelson on November 24, 1927, Dick was a lifelong resident of Rich Square, North Carolina. A United States Army veteran, he spent over four decades as a dedicated employee of Roanoke Electric Cooperative in Rich Square. His love of family was genuine, and his siblings, their children and grandchildren were sources of great pride for him. Away from work, Dick was a talented gardener, hunter, and dog lover. His quiet, thoughtful disposition and smile made him a treasured family member and friend.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his sisters: Frances Boykin, Margaret Harrell, and Janie Sumner; and his brothers: Raeford Nelson, William Nelson, and Gene Nelson. He is survived by his sister-in-law Dot Nelson and his nieces and nephews: Sue Sumner Beal, Pat Boykin Sasser, Debbie Harrell Humensky, Mike Harrell, Bill Boykin, Rodney Nelson, Greg Nelson, and Doug Nelson. He also is survived by the children and grandchildren of his nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the Rich Square Chapel of Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 11 a.m. Prior to the service, family members will receive guests beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the memorial service, interment will be at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square.
