Son of Lovell and Dicie Midkiff Godfrey

Lowell Edward Godfrey, 85 years of age and a resident of Amherst passed away Saturday afternoon at his home surrounded by his family following a lengthy illness. Born Aug., 12, 1938, in Branchland, W.VA. where he was raised and lived for many years before reporting to Ft. Knox, Kentucky after being drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed in Ft. Sill Oklahoma from 1961 to 1963. Following his active duty Lowell remained in the Army reserves for an additional four years before his honorable discharge. While enlisted he served as a company cook as well as a qualified sharpshooter. Lowell moved to Amherst, OH. in 1964 where he lived the remainder of his days. Lowell was a faithful employee of the Ford Motor Company Lorain Assembly Plant from 1965 until 1997. Following his retirement from Ford He continued working at Giant Eagle for an additional ten years as well as working for Ed Mullinax Ford as a car transporter for another five years. He formed a great many relationships while at Ford and maintained several of those after retirement combining his love of cycling and people with the Silver Wheels. He would also meet up with his friends at Jamie's Flea Market and catch up with those he cared about while shopping for collectables. People were at the center of everything that Lowell enjoyed, whether that was fishing, going to car shows, supporting his son as a Cub Scout leader or just handing out the sweets he always kept on hand, family and friends were his passion. He was a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Amherst. He treasured his role as a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Lowell could often be found supporting those he loved with his skills as a welder, plumber, electrician and carpenter. He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty one years, Norma (nee Lester); children Anthony "Tony" Godfrey (Lucinda) of Lorain and Lisa MacLean (Chet) of Amherst; grandchildren Kitana and Madison MacLean; and great grandson, Scott Austin Schooley; siblings, John Godfrey (Barb) of Loudonville, OH, Dana Joe Godfrey (Frieda) of Barboursville, W.VA., Doris Adkins of Amherst, OH and Betty Bias of Branchland, W.VA. Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Lovell and Dicie Godfrey (nee: Midkiff); as well as by fourteen brothers and sisters. Family and friends are invited to call Thursday, Dec. 28th, 2023, from 12 pm until the time of services at 1 pm at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave, Amherst, Ohio 44001. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst, Ohio. Full military honors will be presented by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
