Funeral services for Dr. Joseph C. "Buck" Musso, 74, will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church with the Rev. Jude Halphen officiating. Entombment will be in the Holy Family Mausoleum with members of the VFW Post 1982 Honor Guard presenting the flag.

Visitation will be today from 4-9 p.m. at Evangeline Funeral Home, which will reopen Saturday from 8 a.m. until the time of services.

A native of Thibodaux born on Feb. 6, 1928, and resident of New Iberia, Dr. Musso died in his sleep at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at his home.

Dr. Musso was a graduate of Thibodaux High School, Louisiana State University and LSU School of Medicine. He was the son of the late Frank P. Musso and Paulene Hogan Musso.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946-48. After graduation from medical school, he did his internship at Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans from 1954-55 and moved to Delcambre in 1956 to establish a family practice. In 1957 he moved to New Iberia where he continued his family practice until 1984. At that time, he became medical director of Emergency Room Services at Dauterive Hospital until his retirement in 1996.

Dr. Musso served as coroner of Iberia Parish from 1972-92 and was a member of the Louisiana Coroner's Association and served as president of the International Coroner's Association. He was president of his senior class in medical school and past president of the Iberia Parish Medical Society and the Iberia Parish Tuberculosis Association.

Dr. Buck served as team physician to the Catholic High Panthers for 25 years and was president of the Panther Club in 1971.

He was a charter member of Sugar Oaks Country Club.

Dr. Musso was an avid sportsman who enjoyed duck, deer and elk hunting and was a past sponsor of Ducks Unlimited and a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Georgia Boudreaux Musso of New Iberia; his sons, Thomas Musso of Lafayette, and John Musso and Stephen Musso, and his wife, Melany, all of New Iberia; two daughters, Anne Melancon, and her husband, Keith, of New Iberia, and Susan Viator, and her husband, Chuck, of New Orleans; two brothers, Robert and Camille Musso, both of New Iberia; one sister, Rene Lee Waguespack of Napoleonville; and seven grandchildren, Lisa and Jay Dempsey, Mollie Melancon, Amy Claire, Margaret and Caroline Viator, and Maria Musso.

Dr. Musso was preceded in death by his father, Frank P. Musso; his mother, Pauline Hogan Musso; and a sister, Frances Musso Roundtree.

Pallbearers will be Malcolm Thibodaux, Michael, Matt and Mark Musso, Gwain Roundtree, Ricky Musso and Donald Waguespack.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Oscar Alvarez, Nookie Breaux, Dr. L.O. Broussard, Henry Fairchild, Billy Farrell, Dr. Jay Halphen, Dr. Mike Halphen, Sam Kennedy Jr., Dr. Roy Landry, Mac LeCompte and Gene Patout.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Catholic High Endowment Fund or to Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America at 5841 Cedar Lake Road, Suite 204, Minneapolis, Minn. 55416.
