Lemon D. Townsend, 88, of Kokomo, died December 21, 2023, after a 15-year battle with multiple myeloma. He was born in Estill County, KY, on March 7, 1935, the son of the late Hughie and Carrie (Hall) Townsend. He married Diamond S. Turner in Walton, IN, on October 9, 1954, and she survives.

He attended schools in Onward and Walton, IN. He was a star basketball player for the Walton Warriors. Lemon proudly served our country in the Marine Corps from 1952 to 1955 and spent 13 months in Korea. He retired from Continental Steel in Kokomo in 1986 after 31 years of service.

In addition to his wife of 69 years Diamond, he is survived by his sons, Greg (Rebecca) Townsend, Doug (Christine) Townsend; daughter, Pam Roe; grandchildren, Christian Swisher, Jeremy Roe, Melanie Bevill, Brad Townsend, Heather Kurtz, Brittany Fierro; 17 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Orval Townsend, Bud Townsend; sister, Levellia Piercy; granddaughter, Sadie Townsend; grandson, Tyler Townsend.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10 am to Noon Wednesday December 27, 2023, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 West Lincoln Road, Kokomo, IN 46902. Funeral service will begin at Noon on Wednesday at the funeral home, with Pastor Dianne Wagner officiating. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the United States Marine Corps. and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Lemon's name to the Sadie A. Townsend Memorial Scholarship Fund courtesy of the Community Foundation of Howard County, or to the Kokomo Veterans of Foreign Wars.
