Tom Berry Dead
His Long Illness Grows to an Expected Close

Thomas C. Berry died at 10 o'clock on Thursday evening after a long illness. He was in his 29th year. For several weeks he knew what the end would be and expressed himself as being prepared for it. He had been growing weaker for several years, and his constitution was continually drained by the dread destroyer, consumption. He took to his bed more than two months ago and bore all the pain and suffering without a murmur, facing the end without dread or apprehension.
He was the second child of Mr. T.G. and Mrs. Caroline Treutlen Berry and was born in Russell County, Alabama on November 6th, 1857. He was orphaned early of both father and mother, and he became to guardian and protector of his three sisters and three brothers. One brother and two sisters preceded him on this last journey.
In July 1883, he was married to Miss Retta Thornton of Eufaula. She barely left his bedside throughout the long illness. He was faithful to his wife and was a brave and tender husband and devoted father to their baby. Eufaula can ill afford to loose a man of such spotless business and social integrity.
The writer loved Tom Berry because he was honest, pure, brave and tender - a very "golden hearted" gentleman.
