Irene Sylvia Abel, age 87, of Moon Township, passed away on December 9, 2023. She was born and raised in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. The daughter of Polish immigrants, Walter and Agnes (Kolek) Jendrasik. She is survived by her children, Lynne Abel Vanden Bosche and Matthew C. Abel (Holly Kuethe); one grandchild, Heidi Vanden Bosche; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Alfred Jendrasik, Helen Baum, Roman (Ray) Jendrasik, and Joseph (Butchie) Jendrasik. Irene was a graduate of St. Lawrence O'Toole High School and Robert Morris University. After working many years at Koppers Chemical Company in downtown Pittsburgh, fate intervened on October 13, 1960, when she met the love of her life, Enos, while celebrating Bill Mazeroski's famous World Series winning homerun. They were together for over 50 years… a match made in baseball history. She was a longtime member of St. Margaret Mary church in Moon Twp and subsequently St. James Church in Sewickley for the last 25 years. She loved attending the 55+ Club gatherings at St. James and has many wonderful friends there. Additionally, her friend group includes all the wonderful people from the USAir Retirement Club and the Moon Township Rotary Club. Her best buddy and constant puppy companion, Winston, could always be found daily by her side, getting loving belly rubs. An avid traveler and skilled planner, she worked at USAir for over 20 years. She made international travel seem easy with her favorite trips including Krakow Poland (her mom's hometown), Dublin Ireland, London England, Paris France, Rome Italy, and Hawaii. Never one to shy away from a fun time, she travelled to Notre Dame football games twice in September 2023 to see her favorite trumpet player, Heidi Vanden Bosche, member of the Band of the Fighting Irish. Friends will be received on Tuesday December 19 and Wednesday December 20 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the R.D. Copeland Funeral Home, 981 Brodhead Road, Moon Township, PA 15108. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Thomas J. Burke on Thursday, December 21 at 10:30 a.m. in St. James Catholic Church – Divine Redeemer Parish, Sewickley. Following the Mass, cemetery interment will be at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Bridgeville on Thursday, December 21 at 12:30pm.
