Barb's life was marked by a love story that began in 8th grade when she met the love of her life. In 1954, she married Bruce Carlson, and their love endured well beyond his tragic passing in 1966 from a work accident. Their bond was a testament to the enduring power of love. Her children remember her as a strong, determined, and loving mother who always had their backs.

Barb was a woman of great learning and imparted her knowledge to countless young minds. She graduated from St. Louis High School, Michigan, and pursued her passion for education by earning both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Education from Central Michigan University. Her career began in a one-room schoolhouse in the Upper Peninsula near Houghton, Michigan. Later, after her husband passed, she dedicated herself to being a full-time elementary school teacher. Her favorite grade to teach was the fifth, where her nurturing spirit and dedication left a lasting impact.

Barb's life was an exploration of diverse interests and hobbies. She found joy in crochet, knitting, quilting, sewing, and gardening, tending to her extensive collection of cacti. Traveling and camping allowed her to connect with nature, a passion that also fueled her love for birding. She had an unquenchable spirit for adventure, which often led to surprises and unique experiences for her family. During the winter and rainy days she was often found pouring over a jigsaw puzzle or reading. She also dedicated herself to her faith through active participation in her church, where she helped organize countless events, including rummage sales and cookie walks. Her unwavering commitment to these efforts showcased her deep dedication to both her spiritual community and the causes she held dear.

Barb's dedication wasn't confined to the classroom; though she was named Teacher of the Year in 1991 at Wixom Elementary. She also actively participated in her church's activities and charities, volunteered for hospice for several years, and tirelessly worked to raise funds for cancer research. However, she often said her greatest achievement was raising her children to be loving and kind individuals, despite the challenges she faced as a single parent.

Barb embodied a rare blend of qualities that left an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to know her. Her warmth and kindness, combined with a boundless generosity, made her a pillar of care and support for her family and friends. Her thoughtfulness and keen observation skills allowed her to connect with people on a deep level, making her a beloved and engaging presence in their lives. Barb's adventurous spirit and unwavering commitment to what she believed in showcased her as a responsible and upstanding individual. Her reliability and relatability made her a trusted confidant and friend. Above all, her enduring legacy is one of love, kindness, and a wealth of knowledge that continues to resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In the words of Barbara, "Gone where the woodbine twineth, and the whinedoodle mourneth, and the woodpecker pecketh no more."
