Roland was the son of Alice F. Heald. He was raised by Celia Park Dow (Ma Dow) of Chelmsford, Massachusetts. He was married to Marguerite A. Nickerson. He had two daughters, Marguerite Heald Gowin and Alice M. Heald and 4 step-children, Mary Rooney Lane, David E. Rooney, Claire Rooney Woodhead and Edward Rooney. He later married Esther Kidder of Carlisle.
