'Bud' Young killed in logging accident
Funeral services were held Tuesday from Anderson Mortuary for Eldon McRae "Bud" Young, 57, who was killed in a logging accident in the woods near Westwood last Friday. Young was riding a bulldozer driven by Neil Rimbey of Quincy, hauling logs on a telephone line right-of-way clearing job. The brakes failed as the cat began rolling downhill and both men jumped clear, but Young was caught in a cable and instantly killed.

The son of the late Forrest "Frosty" and Carlotta (Dodd) Young, descendants of pioneer families in Plumas County, "Bud" was born in Beckwourth on Aug. 15, 1913. The family moved to Quincy in 1914, where his father held the office of County Clerk from 1915 to 1928, when he was elected Assemblyman from this district.

"Bud", along with his brother, Robert, and sister, Margaret, (both deceased), attended local schools, graduating from Quincy High School in 1932. In 1937, he married his schoolmate, Muriel Smith of Meadow Valley. To this union three children were born.

Prior to the war, "Bud" and his brother owned and operated the Union Oil gas station in Quincy; following this, he operated the Firestone Store in Quincy for several years. During this time, he was a member of the Quincy Volunteer Fire Department and the BPOE. Muriel Young passed away in 1951, the Rhodora Club, of which she was a charter member, donating a piece of playground equipment to Gansner Park in her memory. For approximately the last 20 years, "Bud" was self-employed as a logger, most recently associated in partnership with Frank Redkey.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Hoefe of Bishop and Margaret "Muffie" Walker of Vallejo; a son, Eldon McRae "Jody" Young Jr. of Stockton; and five grandchildren. The Rev. Charles Kinzie was in charge of the services, with cremation rites following.

*Barbara's married name was Hoefer, not Hoefe.
