War Veteran Dies, Aged 90
James A Hurst of Gouverneur, Long a Macomb Resident
Gouverneur, March 8 - James A. Hurst, aged 90 years, died at midnight Saturday at the Hurst home on Barney Street. He had been ill for some time.
Mr. Hurst was born in Ireland the son of Samuel and Sarah McCoy Hurst, which whom he came to this country, when but one year old. The Hurst family were early pioneer settlers in Macomb, large sections being comparatively a wilderness at that time. When the Civil War broke out, Mr. Hurst enlisted with teh Northern forces, and served for two years. He was mustered out as a first lieutenant in 1863, illness preventing longer service. He served in Company B., 60th regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry.
Retiring from the war, he engaged in farming in Macomb, where he resided until eleven years ago, when he removed to this village. He was twice married, his first wife, formerly Miss Patience Wilson, having been dead many years. The second wife, a cousin of the first, was Miss Mary Wilson who died a few years ago. Mr. Hurst did not affiliate with lodges or fraternal orders, Barnes Post of the G. A. R. here, constituting the limit of his membership in organizations.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2:30pm from the Hurst residence in Barney street, Rev. F. J. Brown of Richville officiating. The remains will be placed in the Riverside cemetery vault here for later interment in Brasie Corners Cemetery
