Born on Hodnesdal farm near Leknes, about 15 miles north of Bergen, Norway, the daughter of Johannes Rasmussen Hodnesdal and Bolette Olsdatter Hopsdal. Emigrated to the U. S. in 1903 at the age of 18. Worked as a stenographer in Seattle, Washington before marrying John Strand in 1910.
