He grew up on a farm during the Great Depression and moved to the town of Jonesburg as a teenager. He attended Hannibal-LaGrange College in Hannibal, Missouri where he received an a business degree. In Hannibal he met his future wife, Beverly, and they were married on September 4, 1949.
John served his country for 5 years in the U.S. Naval Reserves. After moving to Quincy, Illinois, he made a career at the Gardner-Denver Company as an accountant. John and Beverly raised three daughters in the 1950s and 1960s and were active at St. James Lutheran Church where he also volunteered as a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts. After his retirement, they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In Colorado Springs, John and Beverly were long-time members of Immanuel Lutheran Church where John also worked part-time as a custodian. John and Beverly enjoyed outings into the Rocky Mountains and being near grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They volunteered at Compassion International for 23 years.
John enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, working in the yard and being a general handyman at home. Over the years, John and Beverly frequently traveled to the Midwest and South to visit children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his cherished wife of 74 years, three daughters, 7 grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
John is preceded in death by his four siblings and son-in-law, Dr. William T. Christy.
