James E. Barker, 86 of Johnson City passed away Tuesday December 5, 2023 at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was a son of the late Herbert and Rosie Tucker Barker. James was retired from the Washington County Highway Department where he had worked for 49 years. He was a member of the Boones Creek Methodist Church and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Johnson City. James loved to go for long walks, playing with his dogs and loved to eat good food. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Callahan in 2022.
Survivors include two nephews, Alfred Callahan and Freddie Callahan; two nieces, Pamela McVey and her husband, Roger and Angie Wilson; great-nephews, Michael Callahan, Zachery Callahan, Braiden Booth, Roman Wilson and Toby Booth; great-nieces, Limb Gillette, Hollie Callahan, Heather Callahan, Catheryn Gillete, Olivia Tolliver and Dessie Tolliver;
Funeral services for James will be conducted at 6:00 PM Monday, December 11, 2023 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Rev. James Chatman and Rev. Mike Dickenson officiating. Special music by Rev. James Chatman. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00 PM until the service hour. Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the Oak Grove Cemetery
