Charles William Grant Buck, 86, of Lafayette, died at 7:35 a.m. Thursday, April 17, 2008, at St. Anthony Health Care Center in Lafayette.

He was born on March 19, 1922, near Riverside in Fountain County, the son of the late Charles Lloyd and Margaret Vivian Hysong Buck. He graduated from Attica High School and had lived in the Attica area until moving to Lafayette in 1989.

On Oct. 27, 1945, in Corpus Christi, Texas, he married Mary Frances Daggs, who survives.

He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945. During World War II, he served as a shipfitter aboard the USS Natoma Bay and was involved in the battles of the South Pacific.

Mr. Buck worked as an inspection foreman for Harrison Steel Casting Co. in Attica for 44 years, retiring on Oct. 26, 1984. He then worked for 11 years as a greeter for Wal-Mart, where he also called Senior Citizen Bingo.

He had been a member of Riverside EUB Church before it disbanded. He then became a member of Attica Free Methodist Church. He was a 60-year member of Fountain Masonic Lodge 60 and received the Masonic Award of Gold. He was a member and Past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star Fern Chapter 194. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3318 of Attica and a member of American Legion Post 11 of Lafayette.

He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and the outdoors.

Surviving along with his wife are two sons, Phillip Terry Buck (wife: Judy) and Charles W. Buck (wife: Loretta), both of Lafayette, and a daughter, Kitte Sue Coplea (husband: Jim) of West Point. Seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by two brothers.
